Villanova, Pa. – Senior Bashir Mason (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) scored 21 points as Drexel stunned Villanova, 81-76. The win was the fourth straight for the Dragons and the first time that the Dragons have ever defeated the Wildcats.
Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St/. Raymond's), who had his first double-double of the year with 14 points and 11 rebounds, scored on a follow up with just over four minutes to play to give the Dragons a 73-71 lead. The Dragons would not trail again in the contest as they broke Villanova's five-game winning streak. Chaz Crawford (Philadelphia, Pa./Hargrave (Va.) Military) came up with two huge offensive rebounds in the final minute to prevent the 'Cats from having an opportunity to cut into the lead. Mason sealed the deal with a pair of free throws with 13.8 seconds left.
Drexel played well early and held a 33-26 lead after Mason knocked down a three-pointer. However, the Wildcats went on a 15-0 run and led by a 45-38 score at the break.
Curtis Sumpter led Villanova with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Drexel sophomore Tramayne Hawthorne (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire) came off the bench to score 15 points for Drexel. He nailed three three-pointers in the contest. Drexel is off until after final exams. The Dragons next play on December 19, when they travel to Syracuse to face the Orange. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The contest can be heard on WNTP 990 AM and on the web at drexeldragons.com.
